The Simonton City Council will meet on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 6:30 pm at Simonton City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend and to participate in sharing their thoughts and concerns via “Public Comments”.

REVISED AGENDA HAS BEEN POSTED

The City has revised the meeting agenda. It now includes a new Item #4. In this item, the City Council will now hold their THIRD budget workshop. This is your chance to see the process regarding how the city will spend City resources.

The Budget Workshop process ultimately leads to the City setting the annual Property Tax Rate.

In FY 2023 (this budget year), this rate was raised to over 44 cents per hundred of valuation from the prior year’s (FY 2022) 22 cents per hundred of valuation.

Simonton Has No Plan to Lower Property Taxes
City Council discussions at the recent budget workshop meetings held thus far make it clear that the City Administration wants to continue to tax the property owned by its citizens, property owners, and residents without lowering the $499,999.00 amount that they previously taxed them in FY 2023. 

This is something of concern to many residents that say they are struggling to afford to live in Simonton. As well, there are many saying that they receive no significant direct benefit from the City for the property tax money they are paying.

This leaves many Simonton residents asking their City Council members for relief.

Per Texas law, as property values increase, the property tax rate must be reduced to stay under the tax caps set by the state, which allow for an annual increase in the amounts collected of up to 3.5% above the “Voter Approval Rate” (aka: “Rollback Rate”) without triggering a tax rate election.
