City Council Meeting Set for Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 6:30 PM

When the Mayor Plays Dirty, Part 2: Newly Elected City Council Members' Agenda Items Ignored in this month's City Council Agenda.

The Simonton City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 6:30 PM at Simonton City Hall. The public is encouraged to attend and to participate in sharing their thoughts and concerns via “Public Comments”.

Again with the Dirty Politics?
The agenda is set by the Mayor. In it, she doesn’t allow the newly elected city council members to vote on the items that they requested by majority vote to be placed on the agenda.

Specifically, items 5d and 5e are not what the city council members requested to have on the agenda in as much as as presented, no vote will be taken – only discussion.

Besides that, having failed at getting her way at appointing Justin Boudreaux as her hand-picked “Mayor Pro Tem”, the Mayor simply placed his name as the only name to be considered. See item 5b.

As background, the Mayor Pro Tem is the City Council’s representative to the City administration – not the Mayor’s personal right-hand person. As such, it is the City Council members themselves (not the Mayor) that are obligated to select one of their members to operate the city in the event that the Mayor is unable or unwilling to do so. Although the Mayor can certainly nominate whomever she chooses, the actual selection and subsequent vote is exclusively and entirely up to the will and the discretion of the City Council members.

Clearly, the Mayor is not attempting to build consensus with this agenda.

The question is: Why?

Is division the order of the day? Is this proof of how our City Administration has become the tail that wags the dog?

As stated when I posted the meeting agenda for the May meeting, the following questions and my analysis remain unchanged:

Is the Mayor’s agenda simply an exercise in unsportsmanlike conduct? Is it dirty pool? Or, is it just the way the Mayor plays politics when the community actually chooses its own city council members?

Either way, it doesn’t bode well for the Mayor’s administration moving forward. After all, without gaining the trust of the incoming city council members and working to achieve consensus, how will the Mayor be able to get anything done?

As before, I plan on live-streaming the meeting via my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SimontonTexas/

In the event that I am unable to stream the meeting, I will post the video as quickly as possible. Of course, it will be presented prominently on this website as well.
